Athens International Airport S.A. was established in June 1996 in the form of a partnership involving the Greek State and a private consortium led by the German company Hochtief Aktiengesellshaft. This consortium was the winner of the tender for the airport building contractor held during 1991-1993 under a BOOT scheme (Build Own Operate Transfer).
